Derrick Rhayn, Chief Operating Officer

Derrick Rhayn’s skills at strategic planning, partnership development, project management, and fund development are well paired to the CU Strategic Planning team. Furthermore, his understanding of asset-based community development offers a unique lens through which to view the work we do with our clients.

Derrick has been passionate about community-level change his entire life. Working in the nonprofit sector for 10 years, Derrick served several organizations throughout the Puget Sound area, including Tacoma Community House, Lifelong AIDS Alliance, the Church Council of Greater Seattle and CampFire USA.

He has also integrated his work into larger community efforts, including serving on the Staff Circle for the Committee to End Homelessness in King County, the facilitator of the University Hygiene Center, and as a founding board member for the Young Professionals Network of Tacoma-Pierce County.

As the current President of Go Local Tacoma, an independent business alliance in Tacoma, Derrick has a passion for igniting local living economies through collaboration and cooperation. He also works with an intermediary called Pull Together Now, which creates networks of individuals and organizations working on social change, and uses their relationships to leverage the change they wish to create.

Derrick holds a Bachelor of Liberal Studies and a minor in anthropology from Iowa State University, a Fundraising Management certificate from the University of Washington-Tacoma, and a Project Management certificate from the Versatile Company. In 2010, he was recognized by the Business Examiner as one of South Puget Sound’s 40 Under 40, and was a 2011 nominee for the Clarence and Lilly Picket Endowment Quaker Leadership Award.
